WHAT WE DO

FamilyCut was founded to create discussion guides for teens, young adults, and families to explore meaningful themes found in movies, music, and other popular entertainment to encourage thoughtful evaluation and a meaningful life.

Our discussion guides, are just that – a guide. We hope our guides can facilitate conversation that is real, heartfelt and life giving. We do not proclaim to have the answers.  Our questions are not that simple.  First, we strive to explore personal perspectives.  In a group or by yourself, we hope you will uncover what you understand today and discover an area of interest to explore some more.

Next, following the production of a discussion guide, FamilyCut will undertake the task to find thoughtful resources: writings, art and entertainment from leading thinkers on our topics.  There is a whole history of collective knowledge to expand and elevate our understanding of the human condition.  Our premise is that thoughtful questions (and further study) delivers meaningful insight for each of us to find our best answer.  Our exploration together is a journey, not a destination.

Oftentimes important topics are not easy to discuss.  Perhaps due to concerns about how to handle differences of opinions or lack of clarity in our own opinions, we can neglect or leave life changing topics unexamined – for a lifetime.   By starting conversations based upon a shared movie, song or book, we hope to create an environment where individuals’ thoughts, feelings and ideas on topics that are oftentimes difficult to talk about at all can be explored in a meaningful way.

Our goal is to explore topics that we feel are universal to the human condition across cultures and across history. Our second goal in discussion is for each individual to be accepted for their contribution to the world and respected for their individuality. We may not fully agree with another’s point of view, but that is OK.  Please take time now to reflect how you will help your group maintain a safe environment for sharing in a dialog that has few, if any, finite answers.

We hope our guides facilitate self-discovery, healing and curiosity in lifelong conversations. We pray that you and your community will welcome and recognize individuality and God’s presence within your conversations.
