Overview: FamilyCut's Discussion Guide for Frank vs God
Exploring Life's Meaningful QuestionsFrank vs. God is a wonderful movie. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did, or are looking forward to seeing the movie soon. After reading the script, we felt compelled to support others in the discovery of our human relationships with God. The movie shares aspects of David and Rachel’s journey, but what about our own unique journey? Our journeys are no doubt our own, but elements in our thoughts, feelings, and experiences are related to our common condition of being human.
The goal of this discussion guide is to explore topics introduced in the movie. We start by discussing what the characters experienced. Even though we all watched the same movie, when we share our personal observations and interpretations, we learn from one another and discover something that we did not “see” in the movie ourselves. Our collective relationship with God and others is so vast that even the simple first part of our discussion guide that evaluates what happened in the movie can deliver meaningful insight. Frank vs. God is a great tool to start a personal journey of discovery about your relationship with God.

The discussion guide has multiple sections and suggests follow-up questions to probe our interpretations and help us discover how we and others think, feel, and act when dealing with topics of the human condition – anger, separation, shame, doubt, love, and sense of purpose. “Where is God, and why does God let bad things happen?” has been asked for centuries. Many peoples, across time, culture, and geography, have grappled with these topics. Across the globe various cultures and sub-cultures have left us their writings – and their personal discoveries. One of the best ways to learn about something is to ask others who have had similar experiences.
Next, the discussion guide offers “Additional Questions” and related topics for you or a group leader to dig deeper and further explore topics that pose lifelong questions. My hope is that you’ll make a personal discovery about yourself and others that can help your personal journey in relationships with family, neighbors, and God be more thoughtful and enriching.
This discussion guide’s appendix (to be developed as FamilyCut grows) will list other resources for more in-depth discovery about movie inspired topics that might be of special interest to you. The discussion guide is structured so your own community, religious or otherwise, can provide or append its own leadership guide and other study resources. (See Upload page for more information.) We encourage you to explore and learn about what is important to you in your life journey. There is a wide range of human responses and writings to learn from.
We hope the movie and discussion guide experience encourages you to take actions in your life that are wholesome and supportive of yourself and others in this enigmatic world that we share. God’s peace and presence be with you.
Sincerely,
FamilyCut
